Etiology and Prognosis of Status Epilepticus in Childhood

Abstract
Purpose:
@EN Status epilepticus is not uncommon in children and is neurological emergencies requiring immediate aggressive intervention. Recent animal studies indicate that, although young animlas are more prone to the development of seizures and status
epilepticus, their brains appear to be more resistant to the development of damage than adults. The purpose of this clinical study is to evaluate etiology of status epilepticus according to age, seizure type and neurologic outcome, especially
recurrence
of status and epileptic seizure according to etiology and age.
@ES Method:
@EN The study was included 30 children of 1 month to 15 years of age, who were admitted to PICU of Ajou medical center from June, 1995 to December, 1995. They were divided into two parts : (1) prospective follow-up for 14 cases and (2)
retrospective
with prospective follow-up for 10 cases.
@ES Result:
@EN 1) Status epilepticus was frequent in young infant less than 3 years of age. Major etiology of status in young infant less than 3 years of age was febrile and acute symptomatic, in children older than 3 years of age was remote symptomatic.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN Status epilepticus occured most commonly in young infant less than 3 years of age, and significant etiology in this period was febrile and acute symptomatic. Risk of recurrent status epilepticus and epileptic seizure in remote symptomatic
group
was
very high.
